Improving Powerstroke performance with water-methanol injection

Powerstroke performance with water-methanol

Improving Powerstroke performance with water-methanol injection

Stage 3 Off-Road

The long haul trucking world has been reaping the benefit of water-methanol injection kits for generations to improve their fuel mileage and overall engine performance, but these kits have only recently become popular with diesel performance enthusiasts. Water-methanol kits are able to give up to 100 horsepower and torque gains on bone-stock Powerstroke pickups without causing any harm to your engine and requiring absolutely no tuning. Best of all, these kits can improve fuel mileage while reducing emissions and exhaust gas temperatures (EGTs). Water-methanol injection is becoming of the ''go-to'' upgrades for Super Duty owners. not only for the huge performance bumps, but because of the relatively low costs for these kits, especially considering their enormous potential for your truck. The kits are fairly easy to install and simple to operate, making them perfect for anyone wanting to add some extra punch under their hood in a cost-effective manner.
Water-methanol injection works by massively cooling the incoming charge air and allowing your Powerstroke to use more fuel to produce more power. Kits from both Snow Performance and Nitrous Express use high pressure pumps to inject a 50/50 water and methanol mixture into your intake tubing. The mixture is able to cool the inbound air by up to 200 degrees Fahrenheit. As secondary effects, the methanol actually acts as a combustion catalyst to produce more power while the cylinder's internal heat causes the water content to instantly turn to steam and create more piston down-force for huge torque gains. Both the water and methanol are completely burned away, leaving no residue or other contamination in your engine.

The first water-methanol injection systems appeared during Word War II, where they were used in aircraft piston engines to increase horsepower without completely redesigning the engine or its major components. Despite it's inherent advantages, water-methanol injection technology never really caught on with mainstream car producers, who preferred to use intercoolers on their factory forced-induction vehicles. The technology found a niche role in the trucking industry, allowing big semis to have better performance when under heavy loads while getting improved mileage. As diesel engines like Ford's Powerstroke have become more common, water-methanol kits have found new applications with the average diesel driver looking for huge, hassle-free power gains.

Both Snow Performance's and Nitrous Express' systems have very similar functionality and design. Both use a pump and a series of nozzles and fittings connected to your wiper fluid tank or a bed-mounted reservoir to inject their water-methanol mixtures into your Powerstroke's inlet tubing. The intake tube nozzles must be installed after the turbo (or turbos in the case of the 6.4L and 6.7L engines) and intercooler. Even though it's just liquid being injected into the airstream, the extremely high RPMs of the turbo's compressor can cause blade damage and cavitation over time. The high-output pump can be installed nearly anywhere, as long as it's mounted under the washer fluid tank or bed-mounted reservoir. Both kits include a digital LCD controller that gets mounted on your truck's dash and gives you real-time information about your engine and kit. Snow Performance's kit comes standard with an EGT temperature probe that allows you to monitor outlet temperatures and increase your methanol injection on-the-fly to compensate. Each kit comes with all its necessary hardware, lines, fittings, and instructions to make installation relatively straightforward. When it comes time to fill up your system, you have several options. First, you can buy some of Snow Performance's 51/49 Boost Juice mixture, use any blue windshield wiper fluid rated for -20 degrees Fahrenheit that has at least a 30% methanol content with no additives, or you can mix your own 50/50 water to methanol mixture as long as you use pure methanol and distilled water with no other additives.

While the horsepower and torque gains are impressive, the best parts about water-methanol systems are their price to power ratios. The relatively low $800.00 cost of a Snow Performance TOW-MAX kit nets you an extra 100 horsepower and torque right out of the box, but more importantly, it will let you run the most powerful tunes from companies like H&S Performance. The only thing that really limits the power outputs of diesel engines is heat, and since water-methanol kits lower EGT temperatures, you can run a high-powered tune without worrying about engine damage and even gain extra power on top of your tuning. Keep in mind that upper-tiered performance tunes may also require exhaust upgrades, DPF deletes, and/or cold air intakes for proper function. The total investment is often worth it and your truck could see up to 600 horsepower with over 1200 ft/lbs of torque. The only issue is that your transmission can only handle so much power and may require torque converter upgrades, if not extensive transmission overhauls or even complete swaps.

Water-methanol injection kits literally open up limitless possibilities for Ford's Super Duty pickups, making them one of the most well-rounded performance upgrades you can possibly do to your truck. Even if you don't want a road-crushing beast with 1200 ft/lbs of torque, water-methanol systems can still give you excellent performance and fuel mileage gains to help you tow or just give you a slightly more satisfying oomph when you put your foot down on the accelerator. These kits won't hurt your Powerstroke, are easy to install, and come in at extremely affordable prices. Unlike a nitrous system, the water-methanol mixtures are easy to fin and extremely easy on your wallet. You'll probably only have to replenish your fluid reservoirs every time you fill your tank with gas, depending on your driving habits and system settings.
